Update 16 – VRChat Port
Additions:
- Ported the Main Mission set to VRChat.
- Added a YouTube video player to the VRChat port that plays all 48 episodes of Space: 1999.
- Made the Lunar landscape a little more expansive and irregular in the Main Mission set.
- Moved Planets and Nebulae further away from origin to reduce parallax movement against background stars.
- Updated the “Blood Transfusion” computer panels in the Computer Room.
- Added the concealed button hatch to Paul Morrow’s desk in Main Mission.
- Added an Eagle Transporter flying by the Main Mission windows.
Known issues:
- The VRChat world is a PC VR world and does not support standalone VR headsets.
- Currently the VRChat port only includes the Main Mission set.
- In the next phase the remaining sets will be added to VRChat and linked via portals.
VRChat Links:
- Note that VRChat can be run in one of two possible modes:
1) On a PC via a VR headset.
2) On a PC via a conventional 2D flat screen monitor.

Novaclade, will you be continuing with the stand alone version of Space:1999 VR? I love the extra options you have in the stand alone. I also like the idea of having a copy just in case VRChat changes and this environment goes away.
Keep up the fantastic work. In my option I think this is the best environment of a space show I have seen yet. The detail that you have put into this is more than amazing. I grew up with the show and now I can walk around in the show I loved.
Hi Canuck, I’m far more excited about about the stand alone version and now that I’ve upgraded it to the latest version of Unity, the project is primed for new and exciting things. Who knows, with the release of Unity 6 later this year, I might even be able to experiment with real time lighting for the interior sets.
In the mean time, I plan on releasing the next update in a few weeks. There are many quality of life and back end improvements to the movement and menu systems just to name a few. Not as exciting as getting around to finishing the cockpit but well worth the effort none the less :-)
I am so happy to hear that you are working on the stand alone version. It was fun showing my friend the environment in VRChat. I wasn't sure if he was as excited as I was but the stand alone version you can do so much more. I wish I could help out but I know nothing about 3D or VR. I hope this will change. I look forward to see you latest version.
Good morning, I guess it’s evening for you…. Hasn’t time flown by! Just wanted to say that I still look here daily, it seems to have become a habit for me, but a good habit. 🙂 and I’m sure many others do the same… hope alls going well for you and your family. Things seem to be quite busy on the Anderson front with many Books and Products being released. Quite impressive for TV Shows decades old.. just shows the love we all have for quality Television. Anyway I just want to wish you well and thank you for your fantastic work in keeping a great show at the forefront.
kind regards, Richard
Thanks for the kind words Richard and all the best to you too :-)
I'm pretty close to releasing a new update but unfortunately there isn't much new in it. The good thing about it though is that I've updated everything under the hood and am now using the latest version of Unity (v2023.2). I've also started using ChatGPT to help me write some of the code which has opened up a whole new avenue for me. I'm finally able to attempt things that I never though would be in my wheelhouse. So for instance, the clocks on the Comms Posts all show your local time now. It's a small thing but I'm so proud of it :-)
I’m looking forward to the update, how ever small. It’s just great that your project is moving forward. I’m know we’re all grateful for your outstanding work in bringing a living working Moonbase Alpha to life and giving us all a chance to relive our childhoods. Many thanks, Richard
Well Richard you might be pleased to know that today ChatGPT and I added another small component to the VR project. I’ve added a whole new section to the menu where you can pick and choose from a library of parts any prop that you would like to spawn in front of you. It’s really cool and I even have small planets bouncing around the Main Mission set like beach balls :-)
thanks for letting me know about the ChatGPT update. Not putting any pressure on you but just wondering about the Eagle Cockpit and how that’s going.
Unfortunately the Cockpit hasn't progressed much at all. It's been such an effort porting the project over to VRChat and now the latest version of Unity, I just haven't had the time to do much of anything else. I do feel good about all this back end work because it has put me in a great place to add interactivity that I never imagined I would be able to do in the past. Don't worry though, I'm quite excited to get back to the cockpit now that I have a functioning project once more 😎
Hey fellow Alphans, this is just a quick note to let everyone know that I’ve ported a second Space 1999 world to VRChat. This time it includes the Corridors, Travel Tube, Airlock, and Eagle Passenger Pod. It’s a little less grand than the Main Mission set but the two are now linked via the VRChat portal system. You’ll find some menu buttons at the end of the main corridor that let you do a whole bunch of fun things.
This PC only world is still in the Community Labs section awaiting final approval but you should be able to find it in there under the name of “Space 1999 – Eagle Passenger Pod”. You can see an overview of the two worlds here… https://en.vrcw.net/world/author/detail/Nova_66
just got back off holiday and tried update 16. What a great update, the lunar landscape looks so much better and the Eagle flying around main mission looks great. Thank you for adding these and other fantastic additions to an already outstanding experience.
kind regards, Richard
Well admittedly there weren't too many new additions in this latest update but I was really excited to be able to start porting the project over to VRChat. It exposes Space 1999 to so many new people and even allows non-VR exploration in 2D flat mode for those people who don't have a VR headset.
As a bit of trivia, the VRChat world has already had 1,575 visits and I hope that at least a few of those people have their eyes opened to the wonderful work from Jerry and Sylvia Anderson :-)
