Update 12 – Props
Additions:
- Tweaked the Moon texture on the globe in Koenig’s office.
- Added a Commlock Docking station to Koenig’s desk and Corridor Reception desk.
- Added “Heuer Timing Board” clipboards to Main Mission, Travel Tube, and Diorama scenes.
- Added menu option to cycle between White, Red, Peach, Orange, and Green illuminated wall panels in the Main Mission and corridor sets.
- Added yellow Moon Buggy to the Launchpad and Diorama scenes.
Known issues:
- The baked lighting in the Moonbase Alpha set uses the white illuminated panels as the basis for its diffuse lighting calculations and therefore isn’t 100% accurate when dynamically switching to the Red, Peach, Orange, or Green illuminated wall panels.
- The light baked shadows on the Moon Buggy are a little too dark when sitting on the launchpad and contain render artefacts in some corner cases.

Good Morning,
I’ve just come across a fantastic new publication that will be released soon by Anderson Entertainment “Moonbase Alpha Technical Operations Manual” it looks like a great book with lots of cutaway artwork. It just shows that there’s still a lot of interest in Space 1999.. also wondering if your working on anything else on Space 1999 VR?
kind regards Richard
Hi Richard, That technical manual looks pretty good doesn’t it! I’ve already pre-ordered a copy and having gone through some of the same modelling process myself, I’m really curious to see how they’ve tackled the various challenges. There is so much variation and inconsistency in the TV show that any two people are always going to interpret things slightly differently.
As far as new additions to the VR project goes, I’ve added a bunch of new props in the form of cases and scanners which you can see here: https://www.eagletransporter.com/forum/threads/space-1999-environments-in-virtual-reality.165121/page-3
More exciting than this though, is that I’ve finally started on the interior of the Eagle Passenger Pod. It’s always a difficult process to establish scale and correct proportions but I think I’ve finally cracked it and my perspective photo matches are mostly accurate to within 10mm or so. Originally I had this deluded idea that I might be able to make the interior fit inside the model of the Eagle that I’ve already done but knowing now what I do, that was never going to happen. So my plan now is to add a new scene to the VR project that includes the Travel Tube, the Antechamber, and the Passenger Pod interior in the same relationship that they had on set during the making of the TV show. At this rate I might have a new update ready in about 3 or 4 weeks, probably at around the time of the release of the Moonbase Alpha Technical Operations Manual :-)
the Eagle passenger pod sounds amazing. I am really looking forward to seeing more of your fantastic work.
Thank you for keeping this great project going.
Regards Richard
Hi Richard,
Well I’ve obviously missed my self imposed deadline of 4 weeks that I mentioned above but it's not all bad news because I’ve been making slow but steady progress and I think things have turned out quite well. I’ve got all the major elements in place with the only things left to do being a bunch of buttons, labels, and doodads. I’m really hoping to get this next update out the door in time for the Christmas break so keep a look out for it :-)
thank you for the update. I always look forward to seeing you great work and I know it will be worth the wait. Been watching the series again over the last couple of weeks. And really looking forward to the update and of course the new Space 1999 book, I’ve got mine on order and hoping it will be released soon. Thank you for the fantastic VR project and for keeping it running. It is one of the few VR experiences that makes it worth buying the headset.. looking forward to your next release. Kind regards, Richard
just wondered if you’ve seen Tenement01’s images on DeviantArt? It really does show that Space 1999 is still a much loved show and still kept alive in people’s minds by the many artists and programmers like yourself. A big 👍 up, to all of the great work still being done. 🙂
What a coincidence Richard, just last week a friend of mine asked me if it would be possible to create a SteamVR Home environment using the Main Mission 3D model. He sent me a 3D rendering as an example but when I asked him where the image came from he couldn’t remember. I ended up doing a Google Reverse Image search to locate the author and it ended up being Tenement’s DeviantArt web page :-)
His stuff is so much more artistic than mine. It is difficult for me to add grunge to my 3D models which would give it a far more believable look and feel. Boy would I love to see Tenement’s models in VR but I guess everybody has their own medium that they like to work in :-)
His work is outstanding, but so is yours. Seeing things in VR is better than just seeing things as a 2D image. And as for the grunge, Space 1999 always had a bright crisp clean look and I think you capture that style amazingly well. Tenements work is also outstanding and it’s good to have both of you doing amazing Space 1999 recreations.
The moon buggy looks amazing. As always you have done all of the space 1999 fans proud. I’m sure like me their all so great full that you continue to share your fantastic work. Really looking forward to any future projects you share with us. Thank you again. 🙂
